Resident Assistant
As a Resident Assistant, I was a leader in a residential community. My duties included maintaining the safety of my residents by conducting regular health and safety inspections; holding social programs to facilitate the socialization of those on my floor; working at the front desk; and being someone that my residents could come to for help or just to chat. I chose to do this job because I thought that it would be a good way to work with different types of people. I worked on a team of 14 people in different academic paths and from different places in the world and my residents were also as diverse. I was responsible for 42 residents from athletes to international exchange students.
Food For Faith Leader
Food for Faith started out as a community outreach project that tied together my love of baking with my care for excellent academic achievement. Finals and mid-term weeks can be very stressful times for a university community, so I wanted to show love to my community by sharing home-baked goods and stress coping strategies with them. I work with a team of 10+ people to bake, package and distribute the items. I organize the times, advertising, venues for tabling, fund-raising, distribution of labor, and organizational outreach. It has been an opportunity to grow as a leader, learn from and hone skills in others, leading and joining them to give back to our community.
Tutor
I have been a tutor all of my academic career, but I started doing it officially in my Sophomore year of college. I tutor Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry to college students. I chose to work at the ARC because it was designed for building long-term relationships with students: the sessions are untimed and held in a large room with other tutors and students. This means that I sometimes have to work with different students at a time, so I encourage students to work together. I can ask the other tutors for help, and I have learnt a lot of information and delivery tips from them. I choose to be a tutor for as long as I can because I like to teach, and I like to teach because I like to learn. Education is important because, without it, there would be no intergenerational transfer of knowledge.
Beta Beta Beta (BBB or Tri-Beta) Research Chair 2019- 2020
Beta Beta Beta is a national Biology Honor Society that aims to push an appreciation of biology study and provide information on how to pursue a biology-related career. As Research Chair, I am in charge of connecting students with projects in their research interests. Through this position, I have been exposed to very innovative research projects. For instance, I was made privy to a research project on insect neurobiology with a greater influence on the navigation of robots. It brings me joy to know that students can have the opportunity to fall in love with research (just like I did) through the opportunities I help provide them.
